Customers often say a perfume “smells different on me”. They are right. The same oil can open brighter on one person, sweeter on another, and fade faster on a third.
The main reasons
- Skin type: oilier skin tends to hold fragrance longer; dry skin lets it evaporate faster.
- Skin temperature: warmer skin projects more, but burns through top notes quicker.
- Skin chemistry: natural oils, pH and the skin's microbiome can subtly shift how certain notes read.
- Diet, medication and hormones can influence body odour and therefore how a scent blends.
- Climate: humidity and heat in Indian cities change both projection and longevity.
- Other products: scented lotions, soaps and deodorants mix with perfume.
What customers can do
- Moisturise with an unscented lotion before applying; hydrated skin holds scent longer.
- Apply to pulse points and clothing (test fabric first).
- Test on skin for a full day before buying a full bottle.
What brands can do
Encourage skin testing with samples and discovery kits, and describe scents honestly. When a customer tells you a perfume turns too sweet on them, suggest a fresher or woodier alternative in the same family.
Our Perfume Sample Kit exists for exactly this reason: skin decides.
