How to Make Perfume with Fragrance Oils: A Dilution Guide

How to make perfume with fragrance oils – Haveli AI Journal cover

Turning a fragrance oil into a finished perfume is simpler than most people think – but the details decide whether the result smells professional. This guide covers the concentrations we recommend, the equipment you need and the maturation step many first-time makers skip.

Choose your concentration

The strength of a perfume is simply the percentage of fragrance oil in the finished product. As a working guide:

  • Extrait de parfum: 25–30% oil in perfumer’s alcohol
  • Eau de parfum (EDP): 15–20% oil
  • Eau de toilette (EDT): 8–12% oil
  • Roll-on: 20–30% oil in a carrier oil
  • Attar: used neat

Always check the IFRA guidance for your specific oil and product type – some materials have maximum levels for skin use.

What you need

  • Your fragrance oil
  • Perfumer’s alcohol (for sprays) or a carrier oil (for roll-ons)
  • A digital scale – weigh, don’t measure by volume
  • Clean glass beakers, a stirrer and coffee-filter or lab filter paper
  • Airtight glass bottles for maturing

Step by step

  1. Weigh the oil. For 100 g of EDP at 18%, weigh 18 g of fragrance oil.
  2. Add the alcohol. Top up to 100 g with perfumer’s alcohol and stir gently.
  3. Macerate. Seal and store in a cool, dark place for 2–4 weeks. The blend rounds out and the alcohol edge softens.
  4. Chill. Refrigerate for 24–48 hours so waxes and haze settle.
  5. Filter. Filter cold, then fill into your final bottles.

Common mistakes

  • Skipping maturation – the perfume smells sharp and unfinished.
  • Measuring by volume – oils differ in density, so your strength drifts.
  • Overdosing – more oil is not always better; it can flatten the top notes and irritate skin.

Scale it up

Once your formula is right, the same ratios scale to production. If you would rather not do it yourself, our Create Your Own Perfume Atelier handles compounding, filling and packaging for private-label brands, with MOQs from 1,000 units. For the oils themselves, browse wholesale fragrance oils in 1 kg and 5 kg packs.
