Fragrance Oil vs Essential Oil vs Attar: What’s the Difference?

Fragrance oil vs essential oil vs attar – Haveli AI Journal cover

“Is this an essential oil?” is one of the most common questions our trade desk hears. The answer matters, because fragrance oils, essential oils and attars behave differently, cost differently and suit different products.

Essential oils: one plant, one material

An essential oil is extracted from a single botanical source – lavender flowers, orange peel, sandalwood heartwood – usually by steam distillation or cold pressing. It is 100% natural, but its smell is limited to that one material, and it can vary with harvest, region and season. Many essential oils are also expensive or in short supply.

Fragrance oils: a composed accord

A fragrance oil is a blend composed by a perfumer from many materials, which can include essential oils, natural extracts and aroma molecules. Because it is designed, it can capture scents nature cannot give us directly – a “fresh aquatic”, a “clean laundry” or a complex oriental – and it can be repeated consistently batch after batch.

Attars: the traditional Indian perfume oil

A traditional attar is made by distilling flowers or herbs into a base such as sandalwood oil, a craft famously associated with Kannauj. Today the word attar is also widely used for any alcohol-free perfume oil worn neat on the skin. Many modern attars are made by blending fragrance oils into a skin-friendly carrier.

Which one should you use?

  • Building a perfume or body mist? A fragrance oil gives you the widest palette and dependable performance.
  • Making an attar or roll-on? Use a skin-suitable fragrance oil in a carrier, or neat where appropriate.
  • Creating an all-natural or aromatherapy product? Essential oils are the right starting point.

Whatever you choose, ask for IFRA guidance and safety documents for your application. Explore our attar makers’ picks or the full fragrance oil library, and message the trade desk if you would like a recommendation.
