A Buyer's Map of Fragrance Families: Oud, Floral, Fresh, Woody and Gourmand

Map of fragrance families

With more than 6000 oils in our library, the most useful question is rarely “which oil?” but “which family?” Fragrance families group scents by their dominant character. Understanding them helps you build a balanced range, brief a perfumer clearly and talk to customers in words they understand.

Oud and oriental (amber)

Deep, warm and long-lasting. Think agarwood, amber, resins, spices, incense and often rose or saffron. These dominate gifting, weddings and evening wear, and they are the backbone of Middle Eastern and Indian attar traditions. Customers expect strong projection and all-day longevity.

Floral

The largest family in perfumery. Rose, jasmine, tuberose, lily, peony and orange blossom, either as a single-flower soliflore or a bouquet. Florals range from powdery and romantic to bright and modern, so describe them precisely: a jasmine-tuberose white floral is a very different product from a fresh peony.

Fresh, citrus and aquatic

Bergamot, lemon, grapefruit, neroli, marine accords, green notes and clean musks. These are the everyday, office and hot-weather scents. In India they sell strongly for summer and for younger customers. They tend to project less and fade faster, so dosage matters.

Woody

Sandalwood, cedar, vetiver, patchouli and modern woody-amber materials. Woody scents feel confident and versatile, and they anchor many masculine and unisex fragrances.

Gourmand

Vanilla, caramel, tonka, praline, coffee and chocolate. Gourmands have grown enormously in popularity and are among the most requested profiles on social media. They pair beautifully with oud and rose in modern blends.

Building a balanced range

A strong first collection for a new brand often covers four or five families: one fresh, one floral, one woody, one oud or amber, and one gourmand. That gives every customer a way in. You can explore each family in our Warm & Oriental, Floral & Romantic, Fresh & Aquatic and Woody & Smoky collections, or ask Haveli AI to suggest a range for your audience.
