Every fine fragrance, attar, candle and body mist starts as a formula, and most modern formulas are built largely from aroma chemicals: single, well-defined odour molecules made by synthesis or isolated from natural oils. If you formulate in-house, run a fragrance-oil business or are launching your own perfume brand, the supplier you buy these materials from decides how consistent, safe and compliant your product will be. This guide explains what to check when choosing an aroma chemicals supplier in India, whether you are buying in Mumbai, Delhi, Bengaluru or importing from Dubai, the UK, Europe or the US.
What aroma chemicals are, and who needs them
Aroma chemicals range from everyday building blocks such as linalool, vanillin, coumarin and the C-series aldehydes, to woody-amber and musk molecules and the patented "captive" specialities of the big fragrance houses. Perfumers combine them with essential oils, absolutes and resinoids to create a finished fragrance oil.
Typical buyers include:
- Perfumers and formulation labs building or reformulating fragrances.
- Fragrance-oil compounders who sell finished oils by the kilo.
- Attar and oud houses modernising traditional blends.
- Candle, diffuser and home-fragrance makers adjusting performance in wax or diffuser base.
- Brand owners who want to understand what goes into the oil their contract manufacturer is using.
If you are a new brand without a perfumer, you usually do not need to buy raw aroma chemicals at all: buying a finished, IFRA-documented fragrance oil is faster and safer.
Seven things to check before you buy
1. Clear identity: name, CAS number and grade
Every material should come with its chemical name, CAS number and, where relevant, the trade name it is sold under. Ask whether a material is the original speciality from its maker or a generic equivalent of the same molecule. Both can be valid choices, but they can smell different and should be priced differently.
2. A Certificate of Analysis for each batch
A proper COA lists the batch number and test results such as GC purity, refractive index, specific gravity and appearance. Ask for the COA of the batch you will actually receive, not a generic sample certificate.
3. Safety Data Sheet (SDS)
An up-to-date SDS in GHS format tells your team how to store and handle the material and gives the hazard classification your freight forwarder will need. No SDS, no purchase.
4. IFRA and regulatory status
The IFRA Standards restrict or prohibit certain materials, and regulators add their own rules. Two well-known examples: HICC (Lyral) is prohibited under IFRA, and butylphenyl methylpropional (Lilial) has been banned in EU cosmetics since March 2022. The EU also expanded its list of fragrance allergens that must be labelled under Regulation (EU) 2023/1545. A good supplier will tell you which materials are restricted and at what levels. See our note on the IFRA 52nd Amendment for what is changing next.
5. Odour consistency
Purity on paper is not the whole story. Trace impurities can change how a material smells. Keep a retained reference sample, smell each new batch on a blotter against it, and ask the supplier to replace batches that drift.
6. Packaging and shelf life
Aldehydes, citrals and some esters oxidise. Look for suitable containers (aluminium or lined steel for sensitive materials, HDPE where compatible), tight seals and, for oxidation-prone materials, nitrogen-flushed packing. Ask for the manufacture date and a retest or best-before date.
7. Minimum order and pack sizes
Commodity molecules are often sold in drums, while many perfumers need a few hundred grams to a few kilos of a speciality. Check pack sizes up front so you are not forced to tie up cash in material you will use for years. Prices vary widely by molecule, origin and purity, so compare like-for-like quotations with matching COAs rather than headline rates.
Buying in India vs importing
India has a long tradition of perfumery and a large aroma-chemicals industry, so domestic buyers benefit from shorter lead times, rupee invoicing and a GST invoice for input credit (prices on haveliai.in are ex-factory Mumbai with 18% GST extra). Buyers in the UAE and GCC, the UK, Europe and the US source from India for range and value, but should plan for the paperwork. Many aroma chemicals and fragrance oils are classed as flammable or environmentally hazardous for transport, which affects whether they can fly and how they must be packed and declared. Share the SDS with your forwarder before booking, and check import rules with your customs broker. Our India page and worldwide market pages show how we ship to each region.
How Haveli AI® can help

IFRA, SDS and COA documents are available on request. If you would rather skip formulation, start from a finished oil such as our Xerjoff Golden Dallah-inspired oil or Laurent Mazzone Black Oud-inspired oil (reference names describe scent direction only; no affiliation), browse our bestsellers, or smell a shortlist with the oil sample kit.
FAQ
What documents should come with aroma chemicals?
At minimum a batch-specific Certificate of Analysis and a current Safety Data Sheet. For materials used in fragrances, ask for IFRA status and any restriction levels too.
Are captive specialities and generic equivalents the same?
They may share a molecule but can differ in isomer ratio, purity and odour. Ask your supplier which one you are buying and evaluate both on a blotter.
Can aroma chemicals be shipped by air from India?
Some can, some are restricted, depending on their transport classification. The SDS shows the classification; your forwarder will confirm the right mode and packaging.
Do I need aroma chemicals to launch a perfume brand?
Usually not. Most new brands start from a finished fragrance oil or a contract manufacturer's formula, which already comes with IFRA documentation.
